What is a Berean?

The scriptural background of our name

Ours is a heavenly vision. It came from the Lord Himself (Acts 26:19).

Acts 17:10-12 (NLT) That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men.

Our church is named Berean for a reason. The above passage says the church in the city of Berea “listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.” Once the Bereans verified that the apostle Paul’s teaching was based on the Scriptures, they gladly accepted the message and allowed the Word of God to transform their lives.

Every Christian should be a Berean! We base our ministry on the above passage. This verse was quickened to Pastor Mark, the founding pastor, in tenth grade as his class was studying the book of Acts in Bible class at a local Christian school.

We desire to exemplify these same characteristics in that we are open to the Scriptures and we eagerly receive from the Lord. And we put the Word of God first place in our lives—making it our final authority.
